Sardi's restaurant at 234 West 44th Street in New York City's theater district was opened on March 5, 1927 by Vincent and Eugenia Sardi. Inspired by a Paris restaurant, Sardi contracted with caricaturists to draw prominent restaurant patrons to illustrate the walls. The first caricaturist was Alex Gard who received a meal a day in return for his drawings and drew for Sardi's until his death in 1948. Born in Kazan, Russia in 1900, Gard emigrated to the United States in 1924. Perhaps Gard's most famous works are his caricatures of Broadway celebrities for the walls of Sardi's restaurant, for which he was paid in meals.
